In 2023, I took a genetic test 🧬. Usually, we only hear about these kinds of tests in movies or scandalous talk shows 📺: “Who’s the real father?” But in reality, they have so many other uses — you can learn a ton about yourself from the perspective of genes and science 🔍.
I did mine through Genotek, and it cost around $95 💸. They sent a little tube you have to spit into (yep, not very glamorous), then send it back via courier 🚚. The processing took a whole 3 months ⏳, but it was totally worth it.
What does the test reveal?
It provides detailed info about:
🧠 personality traits and abilities
⚠️ health risks
🧪 genetic mutations
💊 medication response
🥦 dietary sensitivities
🏃♀️ sports predispositions
Here’s what my DNA said about me:
— cynicism 😏
— entrepreneurial mindset 💼
— sensation-seeking behavior 🎡
— openness to new experiences 🌍
— analytical thinking (text and numbers) 🔢
— visual creative thinking ✨
And honestly, it all checks out. Especially the cynicism — no arguments there. As for the sensation-seeking, that one surprised me 🤔. It refers to people who are drawn to bright colors, loud events, extreme sports, gambling, risky driving, and other intense experiences 🎢. This trait is more common in extroverts — and that’s where I totally recognized myself.
With my pink hair 💖, love for spontaneous trips, parties, loud music 🎶 and wild ideas — I mean, it’s clearly about me!
About sports:
I didn’t expect anything interesting there, but turns out I’m genetically inclined toward long-distance running 🏃♀️. And it’s true — it’s the only sport I actually enjoy and find easy. Makes sense, considering my weight (still under 50 kg) ⚖️.
Health-wise, just a few highlights:
🥛 Lactose intolerance — I’d already suspected it, especially since I’ve never really liked dairy.
⚠️ Mutations linked to a higher risk of injury under intense physical activity.
🌧 And unfortunately, a high risk of depression — that one hit a bit harder. Hoping it stays theoretical.
Now for the biggest surprise — relatives!
In the “DNA matches” section, I found… a third cousin 👩🦱. I had heard of her before from my mom, in connection with her cousin. We met in person — she’s lovely, cheerful, and the same age as me. It was surreal seeing someone for the first time and spotting familiar traits ❤️.
Later, I gifted the test to my brother, and now my Genotek profile shows two close relatives — my brother and third cousin. And around 300 distant ones 🧑🤝🧑. I haven’t contacted them (yet), but who knows what else my DNA might reveal?
