Ever notice how you keep seeing the same people, at the same time, in the same place? Has it happened to you too? Like walking your dog 🐕 every day at the same hour, riding the subway 🚇, or going for a morning jog 🏃♀️.
Happened to me too.
But in my case… it was weird. Really weird.
I’m a night owl by nature 🦉, and messed-up sleep schedules with late-night walks home are pretty normal for me. My 3D printing farm 🖨 is just a short walk from home, so I don’t rely on public transport or have to worry about road closures.
So there I was, once again out of sync with society, heading home close to midnight 🌙. It was fall-winter — dark, damp, classic. The neighborhood isn’t very residential, but there are plenty of restaurants and boutiques 🍷. I usually take the backstreets — faster that way. On the way: a dumpster area ♻️.
That’s where I started noticing two guys. Same spot, same time, every day. Black jackets, black boots, black backpacks 🎒. At first I thought — maybe security? undercover agents? 🤔 Who knows.
Then one day I came out a bit later than usual and saw them unpacking food from a black bag… not into the trash, but into their own containers — lunchboxes 🍱.
And the next day.
And the day after that.
Every single night.
Snow ❄️, rain 🌧, minus 30°C 🥶 — didn’t matter. They came like clockwork.
And then I saw where the food came from: “Bratya Karavaevy” 🥐 — a well-known, upscale cafeteria. If you’ve been there, you know — the food is amazing.
Turns out, a lot of businesses dump their waste into residential dumpsters 🗑 — and honestly, I get it. One commercial container costs about $230 💸. And on top of your own trash, everyone else’s gets tossed in too. No wonder they cut corners.
Time passed, I got my schedule back to normal, and forgot all about the guys.
But one summer day I pulled into the parking lot 🚗 (it’s behind a fence, but still near those same dumpsters), and something felt off. Ten men or so were just… standing around on the grass 👥. All waiting.
And then it hit me: they were waiting for Karavaevy’s expired food 🕐.
I won’t lie — it creeped me out. I took a detour and walked around the block instead 🚶♀️.
Throwing away edible food on a set schedule leads to this:
marginalized groups regularly gathering around dumpsters 🚷.
And this isn’t a coincidence anymore — it’s a system.
Like that meme: “You feed pigeons, we feed the homeless. We’re just operating on different levels.”
