Ages of The Ancient Egyptian language “from the beginning until Coptic “…
As a result of the long period of time of ancient Egyptian civilization, and thus also the long period of the ancient Egyptian language, changes occurred in grammar, spelling, and phonetic values. This is what made specialists in the ancient Egyptian language divide it into ages, each of which was distinguished by linguistic characteristics. These ages were:
1- Old Egyptian :
This was the stage of developing the Egyptian language, beginning with the first ruling historical dynasty and continuing until the eighth
2- Middle Egyptian :
The characteristics of this linguistic stage began to appear from the middle of the 8th Dynasty and continued until the middle of the 18th Dynasty. It was considered the stage of full maturity of the ancient Egyptian language
3- Late Egyptian :
Its characteristics clearly appeared in the texts of the dynasties (from the middle of the 18th Dynasty to the 25th Dynasty), and it was characterized by the development of some grammatical structures and the emergence of new linguistic features
4- Demotic :
Demotic is a script of the ancient Egyptian language. However, specialists consider it a linguistic stage with distinct characteristics, clearly evident in texts written in the Demotic script. It began in the 8th century BC and continued until the 5th century AD
5- Coptic :
This is the final stage of the ancient Egyptian language. It is a stage that descended from the late Egyptian language, That is, as the Egyptians spoke it from the second half of the 18th Dynasty in the New Kingdom age.
Coptic began in the late 2nd century AD and the early 3rd century AD, and ended officially but not actually with the entry of Islam into Egypt in 641 AD, and from that time the Arabic language gradually began to replace it. One of the most important characteristics of the Coptic language is writing the Egyptian language in the Greek alphabet.
Coptic is still used in churches in prayers until now, but some Greek words have been introduced into it. The word Coptic referred to the citizen who lived in the land of Egypt and came from the Greek word Aegypti, which the Greeks gave us, and which meant Egyptian 🍃🌾
