"Recent changes in the Coptic language" Coptic, as we said before, was the last stage of the ancient Egyptian language and descended directly from it, meaning that it was as the ancient Egyptians spoke it around 1300 BC. Interest in studying the Coptic language returned in Egypt in the middle of the 19th century AD, and many Egyptians excelled in it, but the Coptic language used now in churches and monasteries is not the original Coptic, and this is due to the changes introduced by “Arian Effendi Girgis Moftah” in 1858 AD to the pronunciation of the Coptic language by making it like the modern Greek pronunciation, thus changing the original pronunciation of the Coptic language and causing the new pronunciation of Coptic to move away from the original Egyptian roots. The pronunciation of Coptic letters was changed to match the Greek pronunciation of letters. This led to a change in the pronunciation of most Coptic words, and appearing of letters that had not existed before, and disappearing of letters that had existed . The new pronunciation was called the "modern pronunciation," and the original pronunciation was called the "old pronunciation". The modern pronunciation was taught in the seminary, and over time the original ancient pronunciation almost disappeared, and until now the modern pronunciation is still used in our Egyptian churches as the language of worship .. #حبة_Egyptology #sallyahmed #bitofegyptology
