Civilians in central Haiti have reportedly barricaded roads to prevent Kenyan police officers from withdrawing, fearing renewed gang attacks as the Kenya-led Multinational Security Support Mission concludes operations.
Footage from Petite Rivière and Pont-Sondé showed crowds blocking security convoys, forcing authorities to deploy helicopters for evacuations.
The MSS Mission is transitioning to a UN-approved Gang Suppression Force, to be led by Chad with a target strength of 5,500 personnel by October 2026. South African official Jack Christofides replaces Kenya's Godfrey Otunge as mission head.
Armed gangs continue controlling significant Haitian territory despite sustained international intervention.

Easy Coach has announced revised bus fares effective Monday, April 20, 2026, citing the recent fuel price increases by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority as the primary driver.
Under the new structure, passengers travelling from Nairobi to Kisumu, Siaya, Maseno, Butere, and the Ndori-Bondo-Usenge route will pay Ksh1,900 — Ksh150 more than before. Travellers to Ugunja, Bumala, and Busia will pay Ksh1,950, up from Ksh1,800.
Western Kenya destinations, including Kakamega, Mumias, Webuye, and Kimilili will attract a fare of Ksh1,800, while Kitale rises to Ksh1,850 and Eldoret to Ksh1,700—an increase of Ksh100. Southern Nyanza routes remain comparatively lower, ranging between Ksh1,550 and Ksh1,600.

Kenya's Technical and Vocational Education and Training graduates will no longer wear traditional academic gowns at graduation ceremonies, with discipline-specific professional attire set to replace them.
Education Principal Secretary for TVET Esther Muoria announced the change on Friday, directing all TVET institutions to dress graduates in uniforms reflecting their area of training—mechanics in overalls, chefs in culinary uniforms, and other trainees in relevant professional gear.
Muoria argued that academic gowns, borrowed from university tradition, misrepresent the practical, hands-on nature of technical institutions. "Gowns are academic, and we are technical," she stated during the 6th graduation ceremony at Nyeri National Polytechnic.
The directive aims to make graduates immediately identifiable by their specialization, better projecting TVET's vocational identity to employers and the public.

A planned Kanye West concert at Silesian Stadium in Chorzów, Poland, scheduled for June 19, has been cancelled following government condemnation and mounting pressure over the rapper's repeated antisemitic, racist, and pro-Nazi statements.
The venue cited "formal and legal reasons" for the cancellation, while Poland's Culture and Heritage Minister Marta Cienkowska described the original booking as "unacceptable," stating that culture cannot be exploited to normalize hatred.
The Poland cancellation follows a series of setbacks across Europe. The UK banned West from entering the country, forcing organizers to cancel the entire Wireless Festival, while his Marseille show has been postponed indefinitely.
West's controversies include selling swastika-branded merchandise, releasing a track titled Heil Hitler, and making repeated pro-Nazi public statements—particularly offensive in Poland, where Nazi Germany murdered three million Polish Jews during World War II.

Workers from 19 of Kenya's most powerful constitutional commissions and independent offices have issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Salaries and Remuneration Commission, demanding formal collective bargaining negotiations.
Through their umbrella union, the Kenya Independent Commissions Workers Union, employees from institutions including the IEBC, TSC, EACC, National Lands Commission, and Judicial Service Commission are seeking a 20% pay rise for highest-grade staff and 50% for lowest-grade employees, effective July 1, 2026.
The union cites rising living costs and prolonged salary freezes as key justifications, noting members have gone without meaningful reviews unlike other public servants.
Beyond basic pay, the demands include house and commuter allowance increments, overtime compensation, inpatient medical cover of up to Ksh4 million, expanded mental health services, and written job security guarantees during any institutional restructuring.

The Employment and Labour Relations Court has issued interim orders reinstating 11 senior Bungoma County officials, including County Executive Committee members and the County Secretary, who were abruptly dismissed by Governor Kenneth Lusaka.
The officials filed an urgent petition arguing their April 9 dismissal — announced via a press statement — violated constitutional rights to fair administrative action and due process, as no prior notice, written reasons, or procedural fairness was observed.
The court certified the matter as urgent, granting conservatory orders suspending the governor's decision pending full hearing.
Governor Lusaka had defended the mass dismissal as necessary for improving governance and service delivery, assuring residents that essential services would continue uninterrupted.
The petitioners, however, maintained that while governors hold dismissal powers under the County Governments Act, such authority must be exercised lawfully and reasonably, not arbitrarily.

ODM party leader Oburu Odinga has firmly refuted claims that his party suspended coalition talks with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), clarifying that formal negotiations have not yet begun.
Speaking in Kisumu on April 17, 2026, Oburu described the suspension reports as baseless, noting that neither party has even assembled negotiating teams. While affirming a cordial relationship with President Ruto, he cautioned UDA officials against encroaching on ODM strongholds ahead of the 2027 General Elections.
"President Ruto should discipline some of the officials of his party," Oburu urged.
On internal party matters, Oburu shut down speculation about rival presidential hopefuls within ODM, asserting that the party's constitution designates the party leader — currently himself — as ODM's sole presidential candidate.

Detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on Friday conducted a court-authorized raid at Mavvel Hotel in Embu as part of an ongoing probe into alleged corruption and economic crimes at the National Youth Service (NYS), targeting NYS procurement head David Mbogo Muthee and his associate Naftali Kiperu over claims linked to conflict of interest and abuse of office.
Investigators are examining claims that senior NYS officials traded with the agency through linked companies, with transactions estimated at about Ksh 2 billion between the 2019/2020 and 2024/2025 financial years, while EACC says key evidence was recovered and further action, including possible prosecution and asset recovery, will follow once inquiries are complete.
The raid is part of a wider inquiry into procurement deals at NYS that investigators say may have been used to channel public funds through private entities linked to officials under scrutiny.

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula has escalated Parliament's standoff with county governors, calling for criminal sanctions against those who defy parliamentary summons and refuse to account for billions in public funds.
Speaking during a youth empowerment event in Kuria West, Migori County, on Friday, Wetang'ula issued a firm warning to all 47 governors, declaring that continued defiance would trigger legal consequences.
"As Parliament, we will not compromise on oversight. You cannot take billions of taxpayers' money and refuse to explain how it has been used," he said.
The Speaker tasked Rarieda MP and Senior Counsel Otiende Amollo with spearheading the formulation of criminal penalties targeting non-compliant governors, signalling a decisive shift towards stricter enforcement.

Journalist and activist Mwabili Mwagodi was released Friday after being forcibly taken to the Deputy County Commissioner's office in Githunguri, Kiambu County, by unidentified individuals who confronted him while he was documenting the contested Githunguri Kia Wairera affordable housing site.
Mwagodi, who has been following the controversy surrounding the 58-acre parcel — regarded as a sacred Agikuyu cultural site — said the individuals stopped him from recording, confiscated his microphone, and attempted to seize his phone and camera stand, which was damaged in the altercation.
"I have been attacked by unknown people in Githunguri town. They have locked me up in the DCC office," he wrote on social media during the standoff.
His release came after Githunguri AP Commandant Chief Inspector Jonathan Koech intervened and ordered that Mwagodi be freed and his belongings returned. Koech also instructed the activist to notify the local police station commander before conducting future recordings in the area.
