Norman influence in Anglo-Saxon England and the historical context in favour of William the Conqueror’s claim to the Kingdom of England.
NEW SUBSTACK ARTICLE
Looking retrospectively at key medieval sources like William of Poitiers’ Gesta Guillemi, William of Jumièges’ Deeds of the Dukes of the Normans, Orderic Vitalis’ Ecclesiastical History, Edith’s Vita Ædwardi, and the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, I present a concise historical picture supporting the claim of William of Normandy – better known as “William the Conqueror” – to the Kingdom of England.
In addition to this, I look at:
• William the Conqueror’s blood relationship to Edward the Confessor of the House of Wessex.
• Edward the Confessor’s Anglo-Norman background and the pre-existing Norman influence in pre-Conquest England.
• The importance of oaths and oath-binding contexts to the pre-Christian Germanic ancestors of both the Normans and Anglo-Saxons.
